A native of Washington, D.C, Dr. Smith attended undergraduate school at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, receiving a B.A. in psychology. She received an M.S.W. from Barry University in Miami, Florida and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Florida State University, in Tallahassee, Florida.
She is licensed in the State of Florida as a Marriage and Family Therapist and Clinical Social Worker. She is a
